SMEs, and Diverse Suppliers: What stops you from applying to RFPs/Tenders?
I recently went through a thorough RFP process, and a PQQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaire).
Having spent 13 years in corporate sales, I know firsthand that RFPs can be time-consuming, demanding, and at times, frustratingly vague. But beyond the outcome, the process itself is a valuable exercise for any small business looking to secure corporate contracts.
Here are five key benefits you gain from responding to RFPs whether you win or lose:
1️⃣ Clarity on Your Value Proposition.
RFPs force you to articulate exactly what makes your business unique. If you can’t explain your value clearly and persuasively in writing, how will buyers see it?
2️⃣ Stronger Processes & Documentation.
This was particularly valuable for us. Buyers expect robust policies on compliance, ESG, data management, risk management, and more. Even if you don’t win, each RFP highlights gaps and strengthens your operational readiness for the next opportunity.
3️⃣ Experience in Corporate Language & Expectations.
Large buyers think differently from SMEs. Every RFP you complete sharpens your ability to translate what you do into language that resonates with procurement teams.
4️⃣ Competitive Edge for Future Bids.
Feedback from unsuccessful bids is gold dust. We used loses to refine our approach, improve our future responses, and increase our chances of winning the next one.
5️⃣ A Mindset Shift. You Belong at the Table
Many SMEs hesitate to bid, assuming they are not ready or are too small. But the more you engage, the more you realise these contracts are not out of reach. Confidence comes from experience.
💫 Winning an RFP is great. The revenue can be transformational so why the hesitation!
